Cooperative and Non-cooperative Discourse in Games

Topic:
Language & Logic

Abstract:

This course considers the extension of game-theoretic pragmatic techniques to noncooperative situations, and to the characterization of strategies over stretches of conversation larger than individual discourse moves. The latter is accomplished by using techniques from descriptive set theory, which allow the analysis of high-level discourse strategies and their complexity using topological methods. This course introduces the relevant techniques and applies them to several linguistic domains: the selection of topics and discourse moves, and the choice of politeness strategies.
