Modality and evaluation in cross-linguistic semantics

Abstract:

This class addresses the relation between the objective (truth- conditional) and subjective (evaluative) dimensions of modal verbs and particles. The latter has emerged in a number of works on diverse phenomena related to modality (a.o. modal adverbs, modal tenses, tensed modals, mood) raising the question of which level of meaning should the evaluative component be coded. This advanced course studies the connection between the truth-conditional and evaluative dimensions across a variety of languages and phenomena: (a) epistemic modals; (b) co-occurrence of modal verbs with adverbs; (c) mood choice; (d) future expressions; (e) veridicality (aka actuality) entailments.
